This document presents a report on the status of an experimental program of Independent Study and Contemporary University at the University of South Carolina. The program enables students to pursue either an individual or team project for up to 15-hours credit and to participate in group seminars and other activities designed to create an educational community. The program thus far has been extremely well received and appears to be beneficial to both students and faculty. Recommendations are made in the report concerning the structure of the program; faculty involvement in the program; orientation of faculty and students in the program; the student-faculty steering and selection committee; the student selection process; grading procedures; the amount of credit that may be earned; and program funding.
