- Summary:
-
The objective of the faculty training program was to sensitize a basically upper middle class suburban faculty to the environments, backgrounds and life styles of the diverse subcultures and minority groups of the inner city who contribute increasing numbers of students to the urban community college. It is felt that through broadened knowledge the faculty participants would develop attitudinal changes and more understanding of these diverse groups and their methods of learning. The major objectives of the program were to teach the participants how to develop instructional methods cognizant of students with these backgrounds and curricula more relevant to the needs of minority students, resulting in more effective instruction and in an institution more sensitive and useful to its community. In this case, development of knowledge is seen as the first step in a progression of attitude, method and skill development, leading to the greater total effectiveness of individual participants and institution.
