Summary

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 mandates that sex discrimination be eliminated in federally assisted education programs. Title IX has significant implications for a variety of issues including recruiting, admissions, financial aid, student rules and regulations, housing rules, health care and insurance benefits, student employment, textbooks and curriculum, single-sex courses and women's studies programs. This document examines the overall implications of Title IX as well as the specific issues that affect virtually every school and college in the country. It attempts to provide insights into the scope and nature of practices that discriminate against students on the basis of sex, and the changes in these practices that might well be required for an institution to be in compliance with federal law.
