Summary

Adrienne Smith, born in 1934, discusses her involvement with the National Ski Federation (NSF); skiers with a disability joining the NSF (ca. 1976); skiers with a disability initially not joining the Australian Ski Federation; her promotion of skiers with a disability; working as the National Coordinator, Sport and Recreation for the Australian Bicentennial Authority (1984); receiving funding for athletes with a disability; comparisons between working with able-bodied athletes and athletes with a disability; a film made by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation about athletes with a disability; the Confederation for Disabled Sport; the formation of the Australian Paralympic Federation (APF) (ca. 1988); the APF being the first organisation of its kind globally; her work as Interim President and Secretary General of the APF; funding for the APF and events; public awareness and attitudes towards athletes with a disability; difficulties establishing the International Paralympic Federation.

Smith discusses the APF sending its first delegation to the Winter Paralympics (1992); promotion and media surrounding the 1992 Winter Paralympics; bidding for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics (1993); difficulties in regard to that bid; the budget for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics; particular athletes and their achievements; working for Disabled WinterSport Australia; writing a history of the Paralympic Movement in Australia; the shift in sports for disabled people from a rehabilitation focus towards an elite sporting movement; depression in athletes after major events; the Barcelona Paralympics (1992); athletes with an intellectual disability; colleagues and key figures in sports administration for athletes with a disability; public figures who were donors and supporters; various other roles she has played in sports administration; her enjoyment of working with athletes with a disability; what she has gained from working with people with a disability; her current work.
