Intended for teacher educators, the document provides four presentations on the methods and effectiveness of the Braille Speed Reading Institute. A general background of the Institute by A. Ensign traces the development of the project from a request made by a teacher of the blind and partially sighted to the completion and finalization of details prior to the Institute's opening. Listed in the evaluation of procedures by V. McBride are 11 instructional steps (such as begin each practice session with warm-up exercises) given to the 12 blind and five sighted students involved in the 10-day program. Covered in the section on evaluation of the Institute titled "An Exploration of the Effectiveness of Braille Speed Reading Techniques" (by M. Hodson, et al.) are an introduction, purpose of the study, description of the Institute, methodology, and findings. In a general assessment of the Institute (by M. Polzien and A. Ensign), it is noted that the Institute appeared to have made an impact upon the 17 Ss by motivating thought, communication, and experimentation. Attachments include a preliminary description of the workshop, preliminary information for participants, and sample evaluation forms. (SB)
