- Summary:
-
Presented is one of a series of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facts about the exploration of Mars. Photographs, showing Mars as seen from Earth through a telescope, show dark markings and polar caps present. Photographs from Mariner 7, Mariner 4, and Mariner 9 are included. Presented is a composite of several Mariner 9 photographs that reveal the summit craters and the cliffs at the base of a high pile of lava, with an altitude trace scheme drawn across a mountain diagram. An explanation of the changes occurring on Mars on the basis of close-up observations by NASA's Mariner 9 is presented. Both the geology and atmosphere of Mars are described. A contour map showing the highest contours in kilometers above and below the level on Mars at which water can exist as a liquid is included. Student involvement is facilitated by the inclusion of three suggested activities and suggested readings. (EB)
