- Summary:
-
One of a series of seven modules developed to improve the knowledge and skills of vocational educators who are or who will be serving the handicapped in regular vocational education settings, this module, dealing primarily with the educable mentally retarded (EMR), is designed to (1) explain what mental retardation is and to explore the range of vocational capabilities of the mentally retarded student, (2) present the vocational educator with guidelines for establishing and carrying out a plan of individualized instruction for the retarded student, and (3) provide listings of resource agencies and further readings to assist the vocational educator who is working with the mentally retarded. Important points in setting up an individualized instructional program for mentally handicapped students are considered and suggestions are made for modifying existing programs to overcome problems. Two final sections cover (1) bibliographic sources and resource agencies and persons to contact for assistance, and (2) a set of problems/questions designed to enable the vocational educator to check his or her understanding of the ideas presented in the module, and to apply the principles discussed to his or her own teaching situation.
