Articles collected in this booklet discuss topics related to the back-to-basics controversy: basic steps in teaching reading, creative reading, the relationship between reading and writing, teaching creative reading through museum experiences, content reading, and the use of prereading as a study skill. In addition, directions for using a readability graph, suggestions for improving math skills through reading, and discussion of the role of English teachers in promoting literacy are provided. Discussions of reading and vocational education and the functional education needs of adult basic-education students in New Jersey and an annotated bibliography of 12 selected texts for teaching reading at the secondary level complete the booklet. Authors include, among others, Edward Fry, Joseph Zelnick, Patricia Grant, and Josephine Goldsmith. (KS)
