-
Graduate study is a complex enterprise. It is both a legacy of the past and a mixture of novel developments and potentialities for the present and future. One major focus of concern is the problem of PhD's who are either without jobs or underemployed. Declining priorities for research and declining undergraduate enrollment mean limited opportunities for young PhD's to teach, perform research, and enter onto a tenure track. However, graduate study is being invigorated by discussion and awareness of the new clientele it must accommodate: professionals and graduate study returnees, women, and minority groups. An awareness that society may no longer wish to pay for duplicate efforts in graduate sutdy has provoked questions about its quality. Similarly, the possibilities for nontraditional graduate study are being explored. The graduate student experience is an area that has only recently gained in interest, but research in this area is increasing. (MSE)
