This conference report summarizes major speeches, including such topics as "Teaching Effective Writing Skills to Dialectically Different Students" and "New Approaches for Teaching Students Standard English." The four objectives of this landmark conference were as follows: (1) to assist black and other minority students in the acquisition of necessary language skills, (2) to provide language skills that will facilitate a wide range of economic, political, and social opportunities, (3) to teach language with respect for the student's own language and cultural values, and (4) to mobilize the black community in support of research and the establishment of a data base to influence public policy. Recommendations for explicit goals and objectives follow each speech. A substantial appendix, designed for use in developing vocabulary teaching materials, considers context clues, prefixes, suffixes and combining forms, compound words, connotation, and denotation.
