The first and second years, 1974-76, of a research project on the effects of filmmaking upon children who make the films are reported here. The aims of the research were to establish: (1) the processes through which the children proceeded in the acquisition of filmmaking mastery, (2) the relationship of instructional technique to these forms of mastery, and (3) the perceptual, cognitive, and affective changes in the children which resulted from this type of learning experience. Subjects were elementary-age children, who attended a workshop established by the young Filmmakers Foundation. There was an entirely new population in the second year. Some generalizations have emerged: (1) those volunteers who came to filmmaking and stayed in it were different from those who dropped out; (2) the longer the children stayed in the filmmaking workshop the more adequate their analytic skills became. In an animation training session, some striking differences appeared between the younger and older children. This study is only in the preliminary stage of analysis and most of the data are yet to be analyzed. What the results should indicate, however, is the kind of variables most strongly associated with the cognitive change scores. (VT)
