It is often difficult in building a continuing education program to proceed in a planned, rational fashion when financial exigencies, political pressures, and a competitive market all require immediate attention. Because of the difficulty in setting priorities, it is essential that administrative guidelines be established at the earliest opportunity. Four distinct steps are necessary in guiding the development of a continuing education office: the preparation of a statement of overall objectives; development of written strategies for meeting those objectives; preparation of a procedures manual as an aid in the management of growth, and of a document to help orient part time faculty to the institution; and, finally, evaluation of success in meeting office objectives. At Essex Community College the Office of Continuing Education has developed two documents to help secure commitment to the mission of the college and to communicate its procedures and goals to its own faculty and staff and to the other divisions of the college. Copies of the Administrative Procedures Manual and the Handbook for Part Time Professional Staff are attached. (Author/LH)
