-
Reported are results of two surveys of gifted and talented education in New York State during 1974-1975, one sent to each local public school district in the State and another sent to each of the 46 Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). Major findings of the survey include: 92% of Boards of Education do not have a policy statement which commits the school district to gifted programing; eight out of ten school districts have no plans to initiate special programs for the gifted and talented; 98% of the districts use teacher nominations as a means of gifted identification; and group I.Q. tests are used in 66% of such districts. Results of the school district survey are presented question by question in tabular form with results separated into the "big five" (New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers) and the rest of the state. Questions are concerned with definition of the gifted, number of gifted pupils, administrative policies, state support, identification of the gifted, provision of enrichment experiences, and education of teachers of the gifted. The survey of the BOCES reports on questions dealing with formal policy statements, written administrative guidelines, the use of advisory councils and coordinators of programs for the gifted, and inservice teacher education programs.
