- Summary:
-
The spoken mode of human communication, which leaves no permanent record of itself, is often accounted of less worth or importance than the written or printed word. Such a bias makes it difficult to see certain advantages which accrue to speech communication because of the ephemerality of speech communication. In general, the ephemerality of speech communication focuses the attention upon the event of message production rather than upon the artifact of the message. Specifically, ephemerality in the speech signal (1) may act as a spur to the specialized perception of speech, (2) provides an important precondition for the formation of the individual's processes of symbolically mediated thought, (3) fosters the forming of peculiarly human relationships, and (4) historically has helped provide a means of retaining culturally-acquired knowledge without sacrificing the mobility upon which many early nomadic cultures depend.
