In order to collect data concerning career perceptions, attitudes, and aspirations among non-college bound rural young women, a 65-item questionnaire was administered to a sample of 439 students (248 females and 191 males) derived from 9 secondary schools in New Hampshire and Vermont. Responses were categorized by sex and level of aspiration (non-college bound, junior college or vocational training aspirants, and college bound students). Major areas of assessment were: work plans and attitudes (parental influence and current everyday behavior; post high school plans and attitudes toward work; and vocational interests and expectations); formal aspects of high school in career training (perceived role and function of the guidance counselor; courses/programs which help students prepare for their futures; and actual exper:ence with guidance counselor); general job information (perceived helpfulness from courses in high school in preparing students for jobs; and informal sources of job information); work, marriage, and the family (plans for marriage and children; plans for working before having children; attitude toward working when children are of school age; and stereotyping); and perceived suitability of various jobs (a 56-item list). Representative results indicated: NC females were chiefly domestic and minimally involved in school, while C students were more interested in getting to know themselves and in availing themselves of opportunities to do so; in general, the sample did not plan on early marriage or having children soon (NC women did plan earlier marriage but were the least knowledgable about family planning).
