The Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Project (MTYMP) aimed to accelerate the mathematics learning of extremely talented junior high school pupils in special fast-paced classes outside of the regular school program. During the 1976-77 school year, 65 pupils from Duluth, St. Paul, and Minneapolis, Minnesota earned credit in Algebra I and II. This evaluation report discusses findings and recommendations in five areas: the effectiveness of the talent search, students' readiness to study algebra, algebra achievement, affective student characteristics, and the learning environment of the program. The Cooperative School and College Ability Tests (SCAT) were used to successfully identify the participants. The Minneapolis Public Schools Minimum Essentials Test was used to identify any introductory topics which needed development in class before proceeding with the algebra curriculum. The Cooperative Mathematics Tests: Algebra I and II, were selected for granting credit in algebra; all of the students attained the 88th percentile. The Mathematics Attitude Inventory showed decreases in self concept and motivation, and increases in students' perceptions of the value of mathematics and in anxiety. The Learning Environment Inventory indicated that the pupils viewed their classes as fast-paced, difficult and goal-directed, providing for individual needs and interests; and that the students were satisfied with the class.
