During academic year 1976-77, the State of Mississippi provided educational and/or supportive services for 4,811 migrant students ages 5-20 through 16 migrant projects. This was 938 more students than the previous year. Of these, 3,021 students received screenings for visual imparities, 538 received immunizations, and 1,242 received complete physical examinations. Migrant clerks made 3,835 home visits for attendance counseling and 1,720 visits for documentation services. In addition, 1,182 children received books to be used and kept in their homes, and 1,119 children and/or parents were transported by migrant personnel. In the area of cognitive development there was a significant overall increase for 6 of the 13 school districts; 10 had significant gains in reading for 1 1/2 or more of their grade levels tested. Affective data, which compared migrant, Title I nonmigrant, and regular students, indicated that migrant students had lesser self-concepts than either Title I or regular students at only 2 of 11 projects. Six migrant summer projects which provided educational and/or enrichment programs were also conducted. This evaluation report describes each individual program, and presents data pertaining to affective and cognitive achievements, program costs, enrollment, health care and supportive services, staff in-service training, dissemination of materials and information, staff attitudes, and the summer projects.
