This handbook on teaching is divided into seven parts. Following the introduction (Part I), Part II presents essays on student and faculty rights and responsibilities, evaluation and assessment, grades, and teaching and efficiency. Part III is a summary of interviews on teaching and research with 20 professors from the University of Kansas recognized for their outstanding teaching. The interviews offer personal opinions of the rewards of teaching, the relationship between teaching and research, and ways the university could encourage teaching. Part IV presents a discussion of the "technical skills" of teaching including lecturing, set induction, closure, discussion skills and use of questioning in discussion groups. Part V lists and briefly describes the seventy "Improvement of Instruction" awards funded by the University of Kansas Endowment Association. Part VI is an annotated bibliography of books, journals, and articles pertaining to all phases of instruction, particularly the problems and merits of teacher evaluation. Finally, Part VII is a directory of audio/visual services available at the University of Kansas. (Author/SPG)
