- Summary:

This report provides information on the state of supply and demand for science teachers at the present time, and a projection of the situation in the mid 1980's. The demand for teachers since 1970, including science teachers, has fallen drastically, and very few teachers have been hired because of declining enrollment and fiscal problems. Teacher turnover has been sharply reduced creating an aging, static teacher population. Since 1973 the output of high school teachers in academic subjects has dropped 43 percent. This drop in teacher production coupled with a loss in teacher training capacity in colleges and universities will definitely lead to a shortage of science teachers in the mid 1980's, when an upturn of enrollment is expected to take place.
