- Summary:
-
The purpose of this paper is to measure on a nationwide basis the proportion of annual (from 1967 to 1971) housing turnover that represented racial succession. Using data obtained from Current Population Surveys, particular emphasis is placed on how the rate of racial succession varied among regions and was different in cities, suburbs, and nonmetropolitan areas. These data are also used to compare the characteristics of blacks who replaced whites and whites who replaced blacks in housing units. Black inmover households are compared to white outmover households in terms of family type and socioeconomic status. In addition, blacks who replaced whites in a given housing unit are compared with other black movers and the whites who were replaced are compared to other white movers. The data support the idea that black husband-wife couples with children lead the way in replacing white households. A list of references is provided. (Author/EB)
