This guide introduces a program of foreign language instruction intended for a wide variety of students with various interests and competencies. The program provides for a basic course, two strands (The State Diploma and the Local School Credit) and several options. During the basic course, a diagnosis is made of individual students' aptitudes and interests and recommendation is made regarding entry into the continuing strands and options. A program overview is given that includes a discussion of the benefits of language study, a description of goals, rationale for options, and implications for administrators, guidance and teaching staff. In the section on the courses themselves, the basic course and the State Diploma strand are described in detail. The overall objectives of the basic course are presented, as are observations on the content, instructional objectives and resources, evaluation of student progress in developing language skills, identification of personal factors that may affect potential success, reporting and recommendations for the awarding of credit. Four sequences are outlined in the State Diploma strand: the four-skill, listening-speaking, reading-writing and reading sequences. (AMH)
