- Summary:
-
To learn what techniques work for motivating staff members of student newspapers, questionnaires were sent to 203 high school newspaper advisers, mostly in Ohio. Of these, 112 responded. The advisers were asked to indicate each technique listed in the questionnaire that they had tried and to evaluate the technique as a motivator. Individual conferences, professional media recognition, bylines, and field trips were generally thought to be of value in motivating staff, while awarding pins, cups, and certificates was thought to provide little motivation. The major source of motivation was thought to be the enthusiasm and personal involvement of the adviser. (The questionnaire is included, along with reactions to each technique.) (TJ)
