- Summary:
-
This volume discusses (1) ways of introducing authentic language experiences; (2) the challenge to foreign language teachers and the status of the profession; and (3) communication both within the profession and with the general public. Revitalization of the Classics and ways of introducing authentic language via film, theater, music, and student exchanges are addressed in five essays. Factors which affect the professional tasks of foreign language teachers include student, teacher, and public attitudes and expectations. Educational and enrollment trends that affect the profession are covered, and directions in the education of prospective teachers and practicing teachers are discussed. Responsibilities of professional organizations in dealing with matters of articulation and standardization are considered, and the need to keep the public appraised of the relevance of foreign languages to their lives is emphasized. Possible sources of assistance outside the profession in getting the message to the public and methods of communicating to the public are discussed. (SW)
