General guidelines for judging and evaluating advanced degree programs are presented, and the several types of degrees and specific graduate programs are discussed in detail. Graduate programs may be fully prescribed for all students, may have significant elements of flexibility permitting adaptations to individual needs and aspirations, or may be highly individualized for persons with clear and well-defined goals and unusual backgrounds. Accreditation by a nationally recognized agency has been the chosen means for assessing and recognizing the quality of institutional programs. There are two types of accreditation in higher education: general or institutional and specialized or programmatic. Research-oriented degrees have been directed mainly to the acquisition of knowledge and, to a lesser extent, to the organization and dissemination of knowledge. Practice-oriented degrees include those of the major professions. Nontraditional graduate programs and problems of appraising graduate programs in general are discussed. General characteristics of the following degree programs are discussed. Master of Arts and Master of Science, professional or practitioner master's degrees, sixth-year degrees and programs, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Arts, Doctor of Education, and other practitioner type doctorates. Seven general principles and 24 specific principles regarding review and accreditation are presented. (SW)
