- Summary:
-
A series of investigations was conducted to determine the effects of biofeedback training on 20 learning disabled elementary boys, 16 educable retarded boys, and 5 "non-diagnosed" elementary children with learning problems. Treatment of each group consisted of getting the children settled into the room and listening to a pre-recorded audio tape consisting of visual imagery relaxation exercises of 10 minutes duration. Then, the children were given individual packets of handwriting exercises to practice. During the rest of the hour Ss were taken individually by graduate assistants and attached to an Autogen 1500 Electromyograph for biofeedback/relaxation training. In addition, children were given a set of pre-recorded audio tapes utilizing passive muscle relaxation and instructed to use them at home three nights per week. Throughout the investigations teachers and parents consistently remarked upon improved behavior of the experimental children in the classroom and at home. Among findings were significant improvement in self acceptance and perception of ability as measured by the Tennessee Self Concept Scale, and more effective control of muscular tension in the face of reading stress.
