Part of the Anthropology Curriculum Project, this teaching guide presents lesson plans introducing basic anthropological concepts to students in the first grade. The objective is to aid teachers in helping young children acquire an understanding of the concepts anthropologists use to observe, describe, and report social phenomena. This guide consists of lessons planned to take one hour per day for approximately 20 school days covering important anthropological concepts and study methods. Lessons are designed to help students compare aspects of American, Kazak, and Arunta cultures such as housing; material culture (tools, clothing, transportation modes); earning a living; family and community organization; and religion. Each section begins with a word list of anthropological terms (such as ethnography, matriarchical, endogamy, adobe), ranging from 24 to 103 words. It continues by listing educational objectives, and concludes with suggested review questions. The final chapter suggests 12 learning activities, including creating a scrapbook of magazine pictures about American culture; making a mural, model, or diorama; and inviting parents to a program. A bibliography geared to the first grade is included. A 17-page glossary, designed to help the teacher by defining the words in the word list, concludes the guide. (CK)
