A study was conducted to measure management styles in higher education doctoral institutions accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as perceived by administrative employees. The survey population was the administrative employees, excluding the chief executive officer, of the 61 institutions listed by the SACS Commission on Colleges as members granting bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees. A random sample of 614 administrative employees from 31 institutions were surveyed, and 353 usable responses were received. Respondents were compared to nonrespondents on vertical and horizontal positions within their organizations. A modified version of Likert's "Profile of Organizational Characteristics" was developed and used to measure the individual's perceptions of the sytle of management used at his institution. The form identified management variables in the areas of leadership, motivation, communication, interaction-influence processes, decisionmaking, goal setting, controls, and training. It provided a measure of the organization's management style as perceived by respondents on a system-1 to system-4 continuum. Most of the item means were in the system-3 (consultative) range; several other means for items occurred in the system-2 (benevolent/authoritative) range. Implications of the results are discussed.
