Summary

The effects of participation in field study programs on levels of anxiety and assertiveness among college students was investigated. Students enrolled in the Great Lakes Colleges Association - Philadelphia Urban Semester, 1976-1977, were systematically assessed for levels of anxiety and related personality dimensions using the Adjective Check List on a periodic basis. The results of the analysis showed significantly higher levels of anxiety in the early stages of the program in contrast to students on-campus. Subsequent measures indicated significant increases in coping abilities and levels of self-confidence among students enrolled in the field study not reflected in the campus-based students. No significant relationships between ability to cope and levels of assertiveness were established, although the data suggests the utility of systematic assertiveness training as a means of enhancing coping abilities and reducing situational anxiety in an urban field study situation.
