Both a discussion of teaching American Indian literature and an annotated bibliography of books by and about American Indians are included in this book. The section on teaching the literature of the American Indian discusses important themes in Indian literature, Indian stereotypes in literature, and Indian literature of the mid-seventies. Aids for the teacher include guides to curriculum planning, suggestions for a basic library of Indian literature, and a list of sources of additional materials. Capsule biographies of 54 of the more prolific or better known American Indian scholars and writers are presented. Topics in the annotated bibliography include myth, legend, oratory, and poetry; fiction; biography and autobiography; history; traditional life and culture; modern life and problems; and music, arts, and crafts.
