The document presents Module 1, characteristics of the gifted/talented student, of the Star Power modules, developed for school personnel who have an interest in or a need to explore the area of gifted and talented education. It is explained in an introductory section that the modules can be used for independent study, for small group interaction, or for a large group inservice program. The goals of Part I on identification of the gifted/talented are to recognize a variety of gifts besides academic/intellectual abilities and to gain an understanding of what gifted/talented students are like. Part II focuses on understanding the limitations of IQ and achievement tests as measures of giftedness and discovering other ways to recognize giftedness. Each part is divided into sections with the following: enabling objectives (such as identify and correct misconceptions commonly associated with giftedness); rationale to establish a frame of reference; preassessment tests and evaluation; instruction for scoring the preassessment instrument; activities (which cover such topics as negative traits in gifted/talented and detection of bias in tests); and postassessment evaluation procedures.
