To obtain a demographic description of University of Texas at Austin (U.T. Austin) transfer students, to investigate transfer students' evaluations of the university and of their previous college, and to compare transfer students with non-transfer undergraduate students, 1,365 responses to a questionnaire were analyzed. The survey explored student background, both familial and academic; reasons for entering and transfering colleges; characteristics of previously attended college; comparison of previous college with the U.T. Austin; grades; and major choice. Among findings were that most respondents graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class, that the majority made the decision to enter college in elementary school, that 22 percent had attended two institutions prior to U.T. Austin, and that reasons most often given for previous choice of college were expenses and proximity to home. Other findings showed that 80 percent had previously attended school in Texas; most respondents chose U.T. Austin because of its general academic reputation, special strength in intended major field, and a general impression of campus and students; and 72 percent listed family as their main source of financial support while at school. The transfer student questionnaire is appended. (PHR)
