The papers written by 57 high school students during the 1977 New York Regents Comprehensive Examination in English were analyzed to determine patterns of student writing maturity in comparison with research by Kellogg W. Hunt. Data were collected for t-unit length, clause length, clauses per t-unit, and t-units per sentence. A case study to discern qualitative rating features also was developed, using eight themes graded by two teachers. The results were as follows: The mean t-unit length of the top three quality groups corresponded to the length that Hunt prescribed for grade 12. The papers with the longest t-unit length were among those receiving the highest grades. Nearly one third of the papers had t-unit lengths less than the length that Hunt prescribed for grade 8, but only 23% received the lowest quality grade. Mean clause lengths were longer for the top quality groups, but more than half the papers had clause lengths below the length that Hunt designated for grade 8. No direct correlation was evident between a paper's quality grade and the ratio of clauses per t-unit. The best papers had the lowest ratio of t-units per sentence. The eight papers rated by the two teachers showed variations in quality that did not correspond to their rating order; and these papers were ranked in a different order by a third evaluator. (RL)
