- Summary:
-
Four groups of students were compared on cumulative grade point average, total credit hours attempted, and differences between predicted and actual grade point average (GPA). The four groups of students were formed by the semester in which they declared a major: students declaring in the third semester made up one group, those declaring in the fourth semester made up another, those declaring in the fifth, and those not declared by the fifth semester were the last groups. Early declarers tended to take more hours, achieve better in those heavier loads and achieve beyond predicted levels; whereas late declarers took fewer hours, had lower levels of achievement and tended to perform below predicted levels. For the four groups, means and standard deviations are provided for Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, relative high school rank, cumulative GPA, cumulative hours of college enrollment, and the difference between actual cumulative GPA and predicted cumulative GPA.
