- Summary:
-
Six waitresses in a restaurant of a large midwestern city agreed to participate in a study of the nonverbal effects of ornamentation. The hypothesis was that diners would leave larger tips for a waitress who wore a flower in her hair than for the same waitress without a flower. During the four nights that data were collected, the waitresses alternated two nights with and two nights without wearing flowers. The data show that the amount of tip substantially increased when a waitress wore a flower in her hair. Separate analyses revealed that each waitress could expect to receive an average of $0.26 more per person when wearing the flower. While some waitresses increased their tips more than others, every waitress increased in the predicted direction. (RL)
