Although family integration is a much-used concept in sociological research on the family, there has been no consistency in its definition or measurement. Numerous factors representing family integration have been combined to develop a measure, the Family Integration Index, designed to be a more valid and reliable measure of the multi-dimensional concept than currently exists. Family integration is a multi-dimensional concept which has three stable dimensions representing three functions of the family (cohesion, expressive functions and instrumental functions). Arguments made for a measure which does not include items directly tapping relationships with father or mother results in an index which can be unambiguously administered to individuals from nuclear families of various configurations.
