- Summary:
-
The model for teaching reading and writing as integrated processes advocated in this paper is based on a holistic understanding of composing. Psycholinguistics, cognitive theory, and composing research are reviewed extensively in an attempt to clarify their theoretical implications for teachers of composing. Concepts discussed as applicable to an integrated model of teaching composing include the following: (1) reading is as much an act of composing as writing; (2) three types of speech--social, inner, and written--are interdependent and should be synthesized; (3) because learning is functional, the more abstract forms of written discourse must develop from functional intellectual contexts; and (4) because thinking develops by stages, a reader/writer can become more adept at controlling symbolic relationships unbound by the sensory world.
