Suggestopedic language teaching, which is based on Lozanov's theories and their applications to teaching, is discussed. A language course based on suggestopedia covers a large amount of material in a very short time. This approach is designed to stimulate the student to assimilate a considerable amount in a short time, enabling him to use the language as a communication tool as early as possible. In addition, the beginning of a course is treated as a particularly sensitive and important time, since the initial phase may largely determine the learner's language behavior. From the very first minutes of a suggestopedic course, the student is involved in quasi-real communication. The 12 students who make up the group are involved in the first dialogue, the theme of which is "getting acquainted." The important elements in this teaching approach involve freeing the student quickly from inner tensions, because after a brief contact with the language, conversation with a neighbor is achieved. It is suggested that the basic instructional materials of the suggestopedic course satisfy the student's need to communicate by providing him with the means of doing so without undue concern for linguistic progression. The materials should also take into account emotional factors that may have unconscious repercussions on learning. Further discussion concerns adult groups in a suggestopedic language course, the application of music for deep psychopedagogy in language teaching, and teacher and student roles. (SW)
