This paper is concerned with the relationship between Rastafarianism and black youth in Great Britain. Rastafarianism is considered from three main perspectives: (1) the social, economic, and historical context of the movement's development among poor blacks in Jamaica since the 1930's; (2) the evolution of Reggae as the musical expression of Rastafarianism, and the music's role as a disseminator of the movement to young people in Great Britain; and (3) the experiences of blacks in British society, with its historic and current racist structure. It is held that, for economically disadvantaged black youth, Rastafarianism is the only social reference point that gives positive reinforcement to the black identity. It is also suggested that the youths' political insights, knowledge of Reggae, and articulate expression of their knowledge should be integrated into the curriculum of multiracial schools.
