Data from a nationwide survey of mentally retarded people in state operated residential institutions are presented. Findings are listed for 22 aspects, including number of facilities, average daily residents, new admissions, readmissions during the year, deaths during the year, per diem cost, admissions ratios, termination ratios, net population change, and general population base of facilities. Among overall findings are a 27% decrease in numbers of institutionalized persons from 1970 to 1978, and a varied turnover rate as measured by admissions and releases. (CL)
