- Summary:

The project described was conducted to study how young children proceed to the acquisition of mastery in making films, how teaching technique is related to these forms of mastery, and what perceptual, cognitive, and affective changes occur in children as a result of these experiences. The development of a methodology for the study and problems encountered are reviewed, and a case study of Rose--one of the pupils in the study--and descriptions of the other pupils involved and their films are provided. The training film and animation study method used are described, followed by descriptions of the animation study in terms of narrative code, multiple codes of film making, and film as the meeting place of multiple codes. The workshop, content of the workshop films, and coding of film techniques are discussed. Factor analyses of the film techniques are reported, as well as psychological measures used and the children's reactions to film making. Conclusions are concerned with the evaluation of young filmmakers, issues in child film making, history of film making, social scientific analysis, formal characteristics of children's film, and aesthetics of children's film making. A bibliography and a list of the films produced at the workshop are also provided. (CHC)
