This guide is designed to provide employment trainers and instructors with educational materials that can be used to prepare young women to enter appreticeship or advanced training programs in the skilled trades. The manual describes basic classroom exercises used to sharpen required skills of apprenticeship candidates. It emphasizes clarifying expectations and developing work behavior strategies with women who are interested in occupations still considered nontraditional for them. The "Blueprint" is intended for use by trainers who recognize their clients' need for supportive encouragement to open the barriers blocking success in entering and staying in a skilled trades work environment. The terms used to describe the steps in designing this program correspond to the stages of construction, so that trainers can conceptualize all of the elements needed for a complete training plan. Each training activity described includes a specific goal, materials (tools) needed, and training instructions. Sample handouts accompany many of the exercises. The appendix includes a sample curriculum and a bibliography of materials which apply to construction jobs (the focus of "Opening Trade Barriers") as well as reference materials that apply to any nontraditional job for women.
