This paper describes the procedures and results of a needs assessment study on sex equity conducted in Tucson, Arizona. The findings of this assessment, provided one basis for the selection of sex equity resources to be used in a national demonstration project. Procedures reviewed include: (1) analysis of archival data; (2) analysis of critical incidents; and (3) analysis of student responses. The analysis of archival data covered enrollment balance and imbalance, academic achievement, faculty composition, reports on student satisfaction and dissatisfaction with school programs; and (4) reports on student interests and aspirations. The critical incidents analysis focused on school and community members' attitudes regarding sex equity. The analysis of student responses collected information on student attitudes toward sex roles. Evidence was found of: (1) under-representation of women in academic and vocational courses that serve as prerequisites to well paying jobs; (2) persistent stereotypic role perceptions; (3) perceptions among high school women of inequities in athletic opportunities and other aspects of the school program; and (4) reluctance of women students to enroll in nontraditional courses.
