Folkloric recording. TAPE 1: Florence Dawson, known as Dot, born in Maryborough, Vic. recalls her mother's Italian background; her father's Welsh background; her siblings; winning 4 guineas in a voice training competition in Bendigo,Vic.; her first public performance at Melbourne Town Hall; teaching elocution to young hopeful stars of radio and stage (1920s-1939); early days of radio; her brother who started a broadcasting studio; the first radio sets; working at an amateur radio station (late 1920's); being one of the first female broadcasters on radio. She talks about the criteria for radio announcements; being offered a job in radio, starting in voice production; radio plays; early radio advertising; children's radio programs; 3K2 station children's program; being called up by the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) to work for them during the war; drama section, sound effect studios at the ABC.
TAPE 2: Dot Dawson speaks about Smoky's childhood; when she met Smoky (early 1930's); Smoky's ambition to succeed; their early courting days; Smoky's songs; Smoky's illness after the war; stories of Smoky's convalescence, he being in hospital for over a year; Smoky entertaining during the war; Smoky working at Worths Circus; Smoky working with a travelling rodeo for 4 years, coming home about once a year; not having a family themselves but love children; after the war starting at 3K2 (permanent job); having to resign from 3K2 to take up the offer to go to USA; her job with a radio station in Tennessee, talking about Australian things in America; Smoky taking leave from Army to get married and buying land at Warrnambool, Vic.; taking in a foster child for 4 years; getting involved with promoting Police on radio programs for children (My friend the Policeman' radio program); Aunty June radio program (Dot was Aunty June).
