This submission to the Australian Senate Standing Committee on Education and the Arts focuses on issues related to language and public policy. It discusses the diversified and international nature of Australian society, and considers language enrollments, the role of English as the dominant language and the one used for international communication, and the roles of language in education. The second part of the submission makes recommendations on guidelines for a national language policy; the role of English; information dissemination and public documentation on the use of languages in community, by bilingual workers, in translating and interpreting, and in proficiency assessment; and policy and implementation recommendations on aboriginal languages especially in regard to language teaching. It also discusses and makes recommendations on the adequacy of existing policies and practices to develop Australia's resources and meet international needs; the needs of the deaf and other handicapped persons; and ways of stimulating public awareness of all these issues. Appendices include a submission on a national language information research center, a report of the President's Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies, and the House of Congress Resolution No. 301.
