Summary

Resulting from a summer workshop concentrating on the writing of elementary school children, this booklet begins by reviewing a number of articles read and discussed by workshop participants. The second section, drawing upon the work of Sheila Schlawin, focuses on the composing process and answers a number of questions that teachers have about types of writing, writing quality and quantity, and organizing, drafting, revising, and editing material. Practical suggestions are included to aid the classroom teacher. The third section answers questions raised by workshop participants on such subjects as student writing anxiety, writing across the curriculum, and developmental programs in writing. Case studies of student papers with suggestions for instruction are then followed by lesson plans devised by participants. The booklet concludes with two questionnaires used by participants to review textbooks and a sample evaluation of a current textbook series. (HOD)
