Data on U.S. 1981 college and university enrollments and trends for the past few years are presented. Information is provided on enrollment in institutions of higher education by control and level of institution, student sex and age, and full- or part-time attendance status of students. Specific data include: enrollment of first-time freshmen in U.S. colleges and universities, by control and level of institution; undergraduate, graduate, and first-professional enrollments by type of institution, attendance status, and sex; enrollments for each state by level, attendance status, and sex; enrollments in public and private institutions for each state; enrollment in the 100 largest public institutions; and full-time equivalent and part-time enrollments. Highlights include the following: enrollment in all colleges and universities continued to increase in 1981; two-year institutions accounted for the majority of the overall enrollment growth in 1981; women continued to enroll at a faster rate then men; and private institutions reported slightly higher rates of growth in 1981 than did public institutions. Appendices include information on the study methodology and institutional classifications. (SW)
