This discussion of the use of games and simulations in instruction includes a number of examples of activities that can be used in the community college classroom. Section I assesses the value of games and simulations as an approach to learning; defines games, simulations, and non-simulation games; considers the advantages and disadvantages of the approaches; reviews relevant research findings; and discusses cooperative games/simulations. Section II presents criteria for selecting games/simulations for the classroom and highlights five phases of their use (i.e., planning and preparation; introduction; assignment of roles and teams; running of the game; and debriefing). Section III explains the steps in designing non-simulation games and simulations. Section IV lists 34 games and 17 simulations that can be played at various ages and in classes on all subjects. For each, information is provided on objectives, rules, preparation, materials, age group, values, examples, and variations. A list of resources is presented in section V, including companies, centers, institutes, and individuals who produce games/simulations for education. Finally, section VI presents an annotated bibliography and lists additional readings and journals carrying articles on games/simulations. (HB)
