In academic year 1983-84, 19 postsecondary institutions participated in adult literacy projects under the Federal College Work Study (CWS) Program as part of the National Adult Literacy Initiative. (This report presents data from the 18 projects that returned questionnaires.) Approximately 256 college students tutored in reading, writing, math, and English as a second language or assisted in other jobs related to the delivery of literacy services at sites on and off campus. More than 8,200 adults benefited either directly or indirectly from the demonstration projects. Participating colleges/universities recruited, selected, hired, and trained literacy workers, let a collaborating agency do this, or did it jointly. Recruitment of adult participants was often the task of the collaborating agency. The type of training and inservice varied with job responsibilities, with most having a general orientation and specific task-related training. Major problems included the timing of the initiative, which made selection of eligible students difficult, and locating the matching funds and institutional expenses other than the match. Participating academic institutions, college students working on the projects, and communities all benefited from the project. Increases in skills, self-confidence, and motivation were noted in adults who received services. (Names and addresses of participants are appended.) (YLB)
