Following a brief introduction, chapter 2 presents a typology of runaways in which four types of runaways are profiled (healthy, unhealthy, curious, chronic). The behaviors of each type are described and the services needed by each are discussed. General techniques for working with runaways are detailed, including developing a runaway profile, developing formal contracts with runaways upon their admittance to programs, and observing and reacting to runaway signals. Chapter 3 discusses steps which can be taken by parents or others when a child runs away from home, and lists names, addresses, and telephone numbers of national resource organizations for runaways and of organizations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Chapter 4 provides resources for dealing with missing children. Types of abductors are described and 27 actions which may be taken when a child is missing are listed. Techniques are described which could help parents increase their child's awareness of potential dangers. Names, addresses, and telephone numbers are given for organizations which are involved with missing children. A brief description of services offered by various organizations is included. Addresses for national youth information services are given as resources for further information on runaways and missing children. (NRB)
