Summary

The guidelines are intended to clarify assessment procedures used with handicapped students in Maine. Based on materials compiled by practitioners in that state, the manual focuses on prevocational and vocational assessments for students in grades 7-12. A three level prevocational (life skills) assessment is proposed, beginning with global assessment and continuing with increasingly detailed analysis of the individual's problems and abilities. Six life skill areas and subskills are outlined: (1) learning and comprehension, (2) manipulative and perceptual skills, (3) motivation, (4) work habits, (5) personal attitudes, and (6) interpersonal relationships. Methods for assessing life skill areas are discussed, including psychometric tests, behavioral observation, examination of school records, and work samples. Vocational assessment is then described in terms of three major components: work sampling, psychometric testing, and critical observation of behavior. Appended material includes a list of psychometric tests for use with handicapped students and examples of self-made work samples. (CL)
